The first read
Jacksonville is a small town with an outsized presence: a National Historic Landmark District of Victorian storefronts, a famous outdoor music festival, and vineyards climbing every hill around it. It is the valley's postcard, and people who live here usually intend to stay.

The feel of the town
The historic district is a working town, not a theme park: galleries, tasting rooms, restaurants, and daily life share the boardwalks. In summer, Britt Music & Arts Festival turns the hillside above town into an outdoor concert venue under the pines. The pace is quiet the rest of the year, which is part of the appeal.
Food & drink
Tasting rooms anchor the scene: South Stage Cellars and Anchor Valley pour in historic buildings downtown, while Somar Family Vineyards and Daisy Creek Vineyard sit on the surrounding hills. Restaurants and cafes line California Street, and the wineries up the Applegate make an easy afternoon loop.
Outdoors
Outside time
Britt Hill above town is made for a pre-show hike, and the surrounding forest roads open up walking and biking. The Applegate River valley to the south is granite-bottomed and cool for summer swimming, and Table Rocks is a short drive east toward the river terraces.
Schools
Schools & classes
Jacksonville kids attend Jacksonville Elementary, part of Medford School District 549C, and feed up to the Medford district's high schools, with South Medford High the nearest comprehensive campus. It is a short, easy bus-and-car commute that keeps students connected to city programs.

Where people live
Homes in the historic district are treasured and turnover slowly. Just outside the district, streets roll into oak-covered hills with larger lots and views of the valley and the Applegate. Newer subdivisions at the edges keep the scale small.
