The first read
Ashland is where the Rogue Valley's cultural life gathers: a walkable downtown, a university, and a famous summer theatre season that draws visitors from all over the West. It is also the closest town to the high country, which is exactly how many residents like it.

The feel of the town
Downtown Ashland hugs a compact grid of brick and stone storefronts around the Plaza, with Lithia Park spilling downhill from the center along Ashland Creek. It is the most walkable town in the valley, and the mix of Southern Oregon University students, artists, and retired early-adopters keeps it lively year round. Streets run uphill fast here, so comfortable shoes are part of the local uniform.
Food & drink
The dining scene runs from long-standing main-street favorites like Larks and Pie & Vine to smaller kitchens such as Cocorico, Ruby's, and The Breadboard, with wine bars like Brickroom and bird & rye for evenings. The Saturday growers market and the farms just outside town keep the menus on a seasonal rhythm.
Outdoors
Outside time
Lithia Park stretches from downtown up the canyon that holds Ashland Creek, with trails, ponds, and picnic lawns. Above town, the slopes of Mount Ashland catch real snow in winter, and the surrounding Siskiyou trails serve every summer weekend. An hour or so south is the coast of California; an hour northeast are the high Cascades.
Schools
Schools & classes
Ashland School District 5 serves the city, with Ashland High School as its comprehensive high school. The district is known for strong arts programming, and Southern Oregon University sits right in town for undergraduate life and community classes.

Where people live
Near downtown, the older blocks of big trees, craftsman houses, and the historic district are the most sought after. Further up the slopes, homes trade walkability for views and forest. Along Siskiyou Boulevard, rentals and student housing mix with family homes near the university.
