The first read

Grants Pass is the classic Oregon river town: slower, greener, and built around the Rogue. It anchors the west end of the valley, closer to the ocean, the redwoods, and the best-known rafting stretch in the state.

The feel of the town

Life here follows the river and the hills. Downtown streets like H and G hold a mix of cafes, bars, and local shops, and Riverside Park hosts festivals along the water through the summer. The pace is noticeably slower than the Medford side, and that is exactly the point for many residents.

Food & drink

Downtown Grants Pass has found its stride: Cartwright's Taprock sits right on the river, The Horny Goat Gastro Pub pours a busy bar, Food Studio keeps the kitchen inventive, and Powderhorn Café is the local breakfast institution. It is a hands-on food town with a strong independent streak.

Outdoors

Outside time

The Rogue is the headline, with guided rafting, fishing, and packrafting out of town through outfitters like OARS, ARTA, Orange Torpedo, and Arrowhead River Adventures. Oregon Caves National Monument is a scenic drive to the southwest, and the Illinois Valley beyond is one of Southern Oregon's quiet corners.

Schools

Schools & classes

Grants Pass School District 7 runs the city schools, with Grants Pass High School as the comprehensive high school. The Three Rivers School District covers the surrounding county, operating North Valley High and Hidden Valley High, so residents across the wider area have real school choice.
