Field guide · Outdoors

Water, basalt, and timber in every direction.

The outdoors are the reason many people first come to Southern Oregon, and the reason they stay. This guide maps the region's signature places: the Wild and Scenic Rogue, the flat-topped Table Rocks, the high lakes, and the neighborhood parks that make daily life better.

The river

The Rogue is the spine of it all.

The Rogue River runs the length of the valley, from the high Cascades through the canyon country to the Pacific. On a summer weekend, half the valley seems to be on or beside it: rafts in Hellgate Canyon, drift boats below Grants Pass, kids on sandbars at the swimming holes, and dinner lines at the riverfront restaurants afterward.

The classic rafting stretch below Grants Pass is one of the state's signature multiday trips. Closer to the valley, half-day floats and inflatable kayaks make the river a weekend habit rather than a bucket-list item.

Summer

The Table Rocks

Upper and Lower Table Rock rise flat-topped out of the river terraces north of Medford. The trail up Upper Table Rock is the valley's signature hike, with views across the whole basin and wildflowers in spring. Go early, carry water, and leave plenty of time to just stand at the top.

Daily

Town parks & the Greenway

Lithia Park in Ashland runs from downtown up Ashland Creek. Prescott Park climbs Roxy Ann Peak behind Medford. And the Bear Creek Greenway knits the valley together with miles of paved path from Ashland through Talent, Phoenix, and Medford, perfect for coffee rides and school-commute practice.

Winter

A real ski season

Mount Ashland, just south of Ashland, catches genuine snow and open terrain with a community-owned spirit, and its slopes balance the valley's mild winters. Closer in, snow lingers on the high ridges through spring for snowshoeing and photography.

Summer

Lakes and high country

A scenic drive north through the Cascades reaches Crater Lake, one of the deepest lakes in the world, ringed by cliffs and old snow. Closer to home, the reservoirs and creeks of the upper Rogue and the Applegate fill the summer swimming and fishing calendar.

Tie it to a town

Pick the town for your outdoors.

Grants Pass buyers want the rafting at the front door. Ashland buyers want the trails and the ski hill. Eagle Point buyers want the river and the falls. Tell Tim which Saturdays matter to you, and he will point you at the town that delivers them.
