Field guide · Events & festivals

A festival year, from bard to boat race.

Southern Oregon plans its calendar around its festivals, and newcomers usually find their first year fills up fast. Here is the valley's year of marquee events, from the Shakespeare season in Ashland to Boatnik on the Rogue, plus the small-town celebrations that keep the region human.

The lineup

The marquee events, in order.

01

Oregon Shakespeare Festival

March through October · Ashland

A Tony Award-winning repertory theatre founded in 1935, running Shakespeare, classics, musicals, and new plays across three stages in downtown Ashland. For a full season, it is the cultural engine of the valley.

02

Britt Music & Arts Festival

June through September · Jacksonville

The Pacific Northwest's signature outdoor summer festival, set in the historic Britt Bowl on the pine-covered hillside above town, from orchestra nights to rock, folk, and jazz.

03

Pear Blossom Festival

Second weekend of April · Medford

A Rogue Valley tradition since 1954: street fair, food and beverage tents, the Smudge Pot Stroll, and the big Pear Blossom Parade down Main Street on Saturday morning.

04

Boatnik

Memorial Day weekend · Grants Pass

Hydroplane boat races on the Rogue at Riverside Park, with a carnival, parade, concerts, and fireworks. Sixty-plus years old and still the definitive river-town weekend.

05

Savor Southern Oregon

Mid-June · Jacksonville

The region's big wine event at the Bigham Knoll campus: fifty-plus wineries, a reserve tasting, and some of the best food in the valley poured alongside.

06

Talent Harvest Festival

First Saturday of October · Talent

The little town's biggest day: a parade, farmers and artisans market, live music, food trucks, and the whole community out on the main street. It is the valley's friendliest festival.

07

Jacksonville Victorian Christmas

Late November through December · Jacksonville

The historic district dressed in period lights: tree lighting, the Victorian Christmas Parade, and holiday tours of the 1870s Beekman House on winter weekends.

Details

08

Medford Winter Lights

Early December · Medford

An evening festival at Pear Blossom Park with tree lighting, a light parade, fireworks, and families out in the cold air. The official start of valley winter.

Dates shift a little from year to year, so confirm the exact weekend on each festival's site before you book travel. Tim is happy to point you at the right version of any of these lines as part of a town tour.

Small towns, big calendar

The events people move here for.

Ask families what sold them on the valley and the festival season comes up often: a summer of Britt concerts, an October Saturday at the Talent Harvest Festival, a December night under the Victorian lights of Jacksonville. It is community, served one event at a time.

Tim's standing advice

Book your visit around one festival, then spend the rest of the weekend touring towns. You get the crowd, the energy, and the real character of the place in a single trip.
