Southern Oregon school life is organized by district, and the lines do not always follow city limits. Ashland School District 5 serves Ashland. Medford School District 549C serves Medford, plus Jacksonville and Ruch. Phoenix-Talent School District 4 covers Talent and Phoenix. Central Point runs its own District 6; Eagle Point District 9 reaches White City and Shady Cove; Rogue River runs its own small District 35; and Grants Pass School District 7 sits alongside the Three Rivers School District, which covers much of the surrounding county.

Ashland kids attend Ashland High School. Medford is served by two comprehensive campuses, North Medford High and South Medford High. Phoenix-Talent sends students to Phoenix High School, Central Point to Crater High School, the upper valley to Eagle Point High School, and Grants Pass to Grants Pass High School, with North Valley High and Hidden Valley High serving the wider Three Rivers area. Knowing the high school early changes both the house hunt and the school tour list.

The valley is small and linear, which keeps bus rides short and parent carpool easy. A family living in Jacksonville with kids at a Medford district school has a ten-minute drive; a Talent family crossing to Phoenix High has a ride measured in minutes. For out-of-state movers this is often the pleasant surprise: the whole region behaves like one small city, not a scattered countryside.

My standard advice: pick the district first, then the neighborhood and the house. Schedule campus tours for the spring of the year you plan to move, ask about class size, arts, and athletics specifically, and remember that Southern Oregon's small districts change leadership and programs slowly, which is mostly a comfort.
